8 Simple Ways to Spring Clean Your Life!
Spring is the perfect time to clean and detox your life. Take a moment for yourself to remove all the extra stress and busywork that seems to consume your day-to-day. To get you started, we’ve provided 8 easy ways for you to spring clean your world!
1. Drink more water.
Oooo, this one can be difficult. But it's so beneficial. Ideally, we're supposed to drink half of our body weight in ounces daily. Check out these benefits to hydration below. Water can increase energy, promote weight loss, flush out toxins within our body, improve our skin complexion, boost our immunity, and prevent muscle cramps and strains. Not to mention, we truly need it to survive. Bring a water bottle with you to work, do your best to fill it up as much as you can.
2. Eat more greens with every meal.
Adding leafy greens to your diet are packed with healthy nutrients such as Vitamins A, C, E and K (Which are found in salad greens, kale and spinach.) The daily recommendations vary depending on age, gender and activity level but basically, according to the USDA, adults need between 2 and 3 cups of vegetables daily. While that not may seem like a lot, many of us are not meeting the daily requirement.
3. Make sleep a priority.
Research shows that consistently getting seven to eight hours of sleep per night is beneficial. Any more or less can increase your risk for serious conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and even death. Getting enough quality sleep is also key to a healthy lifestyle. Wondering how to make sleep a priority? I wrote a blog about this a few months ago. Check it out here.
This is a big one, you guys. Why it's important you ask? Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. Depending on how hard we work out, or how much we push our bodies the longer we need to stretch. If you have had a really long, tough, work out - I would take at least 20 minutes to stretch, and focus on which muscle groups need the most tender loving care. If you're especially tight, seeing a massage therapist and getting adjusted back to back is super beneficial. Ask Dr. Rebecca about a good massage therapist that can help you inconjunction with chiropractic care.
5. Start a regular gratitude practice.
This is probably the hardest one for me sometimes. But, the more I practice gratitude the better I feel overall. We all have the ability and opportunity to cultivate gratitude. Rather than complain about the things you think you deserve, take a few moments to focus on all that you have. Developing a regular gratitude practice is one of the simplest ways to improve your satisfaction with life. I wrote a blog about this back in November with how to get started practicing gratitude regularly. Check it out here.
The relaxation response that we can get from meditation can help decrease metabolism, lower blood pressure, and improve heart rate, breathing, and brain waves. Tension and tightness seep from muscles as the body receives a quiet message to relax. When I'm not feeling in alignment, or feeling ungrounded, I usually listen to a guided meditation. With the Calm app, you can listen to guided meditations, or meditate on your own to relaxing tones of music or nature sounds. Sometimes I have the Calm app running in my treatment room - it really promotes a great healing environment where we can all get centered and back to setting loving intentions.
7. Love yourself.
If you don't love yourself, you are physically impeding your success on any health journey you are on. When you choose to love your body, and your health with all of it's faults, your body will heal faster and feel better sooner as a result. The way we start to foster this love for ourselves is by becoming a compassionate witness to our thoughts. Do you beat yourself up? Do you make excuses for yourself and find ways to hinder yourself from your truest potential? When you start to really listen to your thoughts, you will undoubtedly catch yourself being mean to yourself. Would you allow that kind of talk from a stranger? No way. From now on, when you catch a negative thought, think “Whoa! I caught myself in a negative thought – now I can turn it around." Do NOT beat yourself up when you catch yourself thinking negatively. Instead, catch it, flip it, and release your new, powerful, kind thought into the universe.
8. Get adjusted regularly.
Many of my patients ask me how often I get adjusted. I have a blog upcoming what measures I take to keep myself aligned, and my spine healthy. I personally get adjusted weekly, and recommend that any wellness patient do the same. It's important to me to be grounded, and functioning optimally so I can show up for my patients fully!
